What exactly is Express Entry?

Express Entry is a system for managing immigration applications for the Federal Skilled Worker Programmed (FSWP), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skilled Trades Programmed (FSTP). These three programmed represent one of Canada’s most popular routes for economic immigration.

Human capital characteristics such as job experience, professional fields, language abilities, education, and age are used to evaluate candidates. A Comprehensive Ranking Score (CRS) assigns a score and ranks these candidates based on these characteristics. Those with the highest scores following a certain draw’s cut-off date have a better chance of earning invitations to apply (ITAs).

On May 31st, IRCC published a new set of selection criteria, prioritizing specific professional and demographic characteristics of candidates over their CRS score. This resulted in six new Express Entry categories for candidates:

• Healthcare;
• STEM professions;
• Trades;
• Transport;
• Agriculture and agri-food; and
• French-language proficiency.

These categories aim to meet critical job openings in the Canadian workforce while also promoting the usage of French outside of Quebec.
